(Burton, MI)-- November 23, 2010 --Hollis Chatelain earned the coveted MVP award for her quilt "Tangled," a 16" x 17" whole cloth, machine-quilted image of a woman's face. Chatelain's quilt raised $3,537.56 for the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) in the "World Series Quilt Challenge" online auction which ended November 10th. Eight quilters competed for bragging rights, the highest selling quilt earning its maker the MVP award in this spirited competition between the American Quilt League (Hollis Chatelain, John Flynn, Becky Goldsmith, and Sue Nickels) and the National Quilt League (Caryl Bryer Fallert, Judy Mathieson, Mary Sorensen, and Ricky Tims).
The 10-day online auction for November was the most successful online auction in AAQI history raising $12,908.56 for the nonprofit.
A Viewer's Choice component to the "World Series Quilt Challenge" was also offered at the International Quilt Festival in Houston and online. Each $1 donation to the AAQI was counted as one vote, raising an additional $3,693.13 overall.
World Series T-shirts, tote bags, and earrings made with images of the quilts were also purchased bringing in additional funds, but did not count towards the competition. These items will continue to be available through the end of November at www.alzQuilts.org
The World Series Quilt Challenge competitors are already gearing up for next year, recruiting two additional players per team and swapping out their spikes for skates to compete in the 2011 "Stanley Cup Quilt Championship."
