World Quilt Federation Smackdown Winners Declared

WQF Smackdown Champion Belt made by John Flynn.

(Burton, MI)-- December 3, 2009 --Four small quilts by world renowned quilters Hollis Chatelain, John Flynn, Becky Goldsmith, and Sue Nickels were auctioned to benefit the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) November 1-10. November is National Alzheimer's Awareness Month.

The event had been declared a “World Quilt Federation Smackdown” by the participating quilters, each vying to outdo the others in raising money for the AAQI. The 10-day online silent auction was the most successful auction in AAQI history, raising $8,300 to fight Alzheimer's disease. Hollis Chatelain won the challenge — and championship belt. Her quilt, "Fading," sold at auction for $3,600. Becky Goldsmith came in second. Her quilt "Mini Passion Flowers" sold at auction for $2,500. Sue Nickels' quilt, "Golden Feathers," sold for $1,200. John Flynn's quilt, "Red Hawk's Star," sold for $1,000. A rematch is in the works for 2010.

“Each of these quilts brought in more money than any other AAQI quilt previously sold. In my book, they are all winners,” said Ami Simms, AAQI founder and executive director.

A Viewers' Choice component to the “Smackdown” was also offered both at International Quilt Festival in Houston and online. Each vote cost $1.00 (change was accepted in Houston). Hollis Chatelain was declared the winner with $1,612.28, followed by Sue Nickels $304.00, Becky Goldsmith $274.85 and John Flynn $234.55.

An additional $704 was raised by selling “Smackdown” apparel. All told, $11,425.68 was raised for the AAQI.

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (www.AlzQuilts.org) is a national, grassroots organization whose mission is to raise awareness and fund research. It auctions and sells donated quilts through the Priority: Alzheimer's Quilt project and sponsors a nationally touring exhibit of quilts about Alzheimer's called "Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece." The AAQI has raised more than $369,000 since January 2006. Ami Simms of Flint, Michigan is the founder and executive director of the AAQI, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation operated entirely by volunteers. She is a quilter. Her mother had Alzheimer's.
