Statement:
I've felt an intense kinship with Ami's AAQI endeavor from the very beginning. The toll Alzheimer's takes on our society is HUGE, so every single thing we do to raise awareness, fund research, educate, and help others cope is SO worth doing.
I was thrilled to be able to spend time absorbing AAQI's Forgetting: Piece by Piece exhibit during its August 2006 premier in Nashville (it had been just a little over a year since my mother lost her battle with Alzheimer's). The powerful emotions and messages of the quilts were painful, devastating, reassuring, and comforting all at the same time. I found myself being drawn back to the exhibit again and again during my days there...how I wish I lived close enough to one of the display locations to be able to white glove.
And so, I make this pledge in memory of my mother, Lura Ash Walton (1916-2005), and her father, John Warren Ash (1898-1989), and in honor of their journeys. The four Priority: Alzheimer's Quilts and one Little Treasures quilt that I've donated so far are only the beginning.
Thanks, Ami for giving us a way to do something creative, positive, and hopeful in the face of this horrible disease!
