Statement: My mother and aunt both suffered from the disease for over l2 years. It was such a horrible time for family as well. My aunt became mute and never uttered a word in over 12 years. She used to talk to anyone at anytime about anything. You could see in her eyes that she was frustrated that she couldn't speak to you anymore.
With my mom, the disease just crept up on her. We lived in Pennsylvania and she in Nevada and I didn't see her often. Each time she would have increased loss of memory and confusion. She would be so angry when she couldn't remember things and events. The worst time was one day she called me and said my dad had left her and wasn't coming back. He had gone golfing and had been gone only a couple of hours and she thought it had been days and he left her. I called my brother right away who lived only blocks away and he went right over. From then on, we couldn't leave her alone ever again.
She ended up having a stroke and we could no longer take care of her. She went into a nursing home and lived there for 5 years. In those five years, my dad never missed a day of feeding her. I miss her so very much but would never wish her back in that situation. She was the greatest person in my life. We must find a cure for this disease for all mankind.
