Statement: I want to help find a cure for Alzheimer's, in my lifetime. Unfortunately, Alzheimer's runs in my family. My grandmother had dementia and 6 of her 9 daughters, including my mother, were diagnosed with this terrible disease. Only my mother and one of her sisters are still living. My oldest cousin has also been diagnosed with AD. All my cousins and siblings live with the dread of this diagnosis in our future.
I found out about the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative a few years ago. I intended to get involved but never got around to it. My mother is now in late stage Alzheimer's and does not recognize me at all. As I have watched my mother slowly fade away, I have become passionate about making these quilts, as a way to honor her, my grandmother and my aunts.
AD has taken a toll on my family and I want to use my passion for quilting to help STOP it from continuing its painful legacy. I will quilt in hopes that future generations of my family will not be haunted by AD. And with every stitch I will pray that a cure will be found.
