Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative Receives $25,000 from Island Batik

(Burton, MI) June 21, 2011: The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) has received the largest donation in the nonprofit's history, a check for $25,386.00 from Island Batik, Inc.

"We are ecstatic!" said Ami Simms, AAQI founder and executive director. "Most of our contributions come in quilt form, with each quilt bringing in about $64 on average. It's a very labor intensive process for the quilter and for us. Island Batik's check leapfrogged us right to the research. We've already picked out the study we want to fund next."

Island Batik is a family owned manufacturer and distributor of cotton and rayon batik fabric with offices in Carlsbad, California. Moira and Adam Dewar have been proud supporters of the AAQI through the Rose of Sharon project.

"We are very happy to give this money to the AAQI. We think they are doing fantastic work,” said Adam Dewar, CEO of Island Batik.

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative ( is a national, grassroots organization whose mission is to raise awareness and fund research. It auctions and sells donated quilts through the Priority: Alzheimer's Quilt project and sponsors a nationally touring exhibition of quilts about Alzheimer's called “Alzheimer’s Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope.” The AAQI has raised more than $552,000 since January 2006. Ami Simms of Flint, Michigan is the founder and executive director of the AAQI, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation operated entirely by volunteers. She is a quilter. Her mother had Alzheimer's.
