I-411 - First Green

I-411 - First Green

Susan Brubaker Knapp
Mooresville , NC USA

Width: 23.5" Length: 41"

Materials/Techniques: The piece is made of batik and hand-dyed fabric. I pieced the leaves, then hand appliquéd them to the blue base fabric before heavily quilting it.

Artist Statement: The title of this quilt is based on Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” which speaks eloquently to the impermanence of youth, and the eventual decline of life:

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.
