FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(Burton, Michigan) -- January 16, 2013: The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative
(AAQI) announced today that it will cease fundraising operations at the end of 2013. The all-volunteer charity expects to reach $1,000,000 in total revenue raised for Alzheimer's research by the end of this year.
"When I created the AAQI back in 2006," said founder and executive director Ami Simms, "I never expected it to become so successful! I also never imaged how much work it would take to keep it going. As the AAQI blossomed, board members and core volunteers have had to increase our hours and pace to keep up. While I find enormous satisfaction in nurturing the AAQI, I much prefer sewing to administrating. I miss being a full-time quilter."
To date, more than 13,000 quilts have been donated by supporters, turning sweat equity into dollars for Alzheimer's research. The AAQI has funded 11 research studies. Hundreds of thousands of people have seen their two traveling quilt exhibits about Alzheimer's.
August 1st will be the last day supporters can register Priority: Alzheimer's Quilts
. December 30th will be the last day for online quilt sales. The AAQI will offer their annual Celebrity Invitational Quilt Auction in November and hopes to sell quilts for the eighth consecutive year at International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX in the fall. Quilts from the AAQI's current traveling exhibit ("Alzheimer's Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope") will be auctioned online throughout 2013.
