Width: 11.75" Length: 9"
Designer: Original designMaterials/Techniques: 100% cotton fabrics and batiks, 100% cotton batting. Almost 300 fabric mosaic "tiles" used to create the word "Smile" on a bright yellow batik background. Fused and machine appliqud using clear and smoky monofilament, machine quilted.
Artist Statement: Mosaic technique by Julie Hirota as shown in the AAQI May 2011 Update blog by Terry Switzer Chilko. When I saw Terry's article in the blog, I knew someday I wanted to make a mosaic art quilt. Then this past month, while pouring over favorite quotes to use on my quilts, it struck me how the sight of a single word can sometimes have as much impact as the use of an entire quote...that's when I decided to use the word "Smile" for my mosaic. May families dealing with this horrible disease find something in their difficult days, however small, to smile about.
