Materials/Techniques: A cotton print of dark green ferns was machine-quilted in a butterfly shape. Then butterfly wings, cut from various cotton prints or solids fused together, were affixed with machine-embroidered bodies and antennae. The butterflies are three-dimensional. Pinch them gently to lift their wings, and they may even flutter for you.
Artist Statement: I liked the idea of not trying to reproduce a real butterfly's markings but using bright prints of various colors and designs for a more fanciful look. The idea of making them 3-dimensional came to me when I was fiddling around with fabrics. I am grateful to Lois Lock, Elizabeth Minnis, Judia Hilton, and Johnny Rex & Sue Wilson for giving me the fabrics I used to make this AAQI quilt.
