Materials/Techniques: A cotton print of dark green ferns was lightly machine-quilted along the spines of the ferns. Then butterfly wings, cut from various cotton prints or solids fused together, were affixed with machine-embroidered bodies and antennae. The butterflies are three-dimensional. Pinch them gently to lift their wings. They may even flutter for you in a good breeze.
Artist Statement: I am grateful to Lois Lock of Illinois, Elizabeth Minnis of Oklahoma, Mary McKnight of Ohio, and Oleta Bright of Arkansas for giving me the fabrics I used to make this AAQI quilt. I liked the idea of not trying to reproduce a real butterfly's markings but using bright prints of various colors and designs.
