Brant, AB Canada
Width: 8.5" Length: 11"
Materials/Techniques: Recycled and Upcyled: starting with a souvenir batik cushion, I deconstructed it, saving the batik panel and fabric for the backing and fast finish triangles. I removed the original machine quilting stitches and used Glorianna Princess Petite Pearle silk thread in a gold color to outline the figure with stem stitch by hand. The original quilting layer was then cut and manipulated to within the figure's outline. Pearle Cotton was used to wrap the silk stem stitch, helping to add dimension to the figure. The fish was embellished with silver lined glass beads, vintage sequins and a vintage sew-on jewel for the eye. Fleece was used for an additional quilting layer and the binding was constructed from quilting cotton batik.
Artist Statement: I love fabrics that tell a story and open a door into another culture. As soon as I saw this batik I knew I wanted to embellish it further. Once the fish was done, however, it was complete in my eyes.
Dedication: Dedicated to my beloved Aunt, Olive Lowden, and her battle with Alzheimer's disease.
This quilt has Fast Finish Triangles.
This quilt earned $50 for the AAQI.
