Materials/Techniques: The quilt contains cotton fabric, polyester batting, wooden beads, and embroidery floss. I used the Drunkard's Path quilt pattern arranged in the "bird" configuration. Free motion machine quilting was used for the background and to anchor the "broken pieces" below the bird. Hand embroidery emphasized the wings and tail and beads were hand sewn for the eyes.
Artist Statement: My father-in-law suffered dementia from a stroke. Watching his mind fade as his body remained strong was difficult for the whole family. This quilt symbolizes the wish that research will someday find a way for those suffering from Alzheimer's to break free from the bonds of their dementia.
