Width: 8" Length: 10"
Materials/Techniques: Painted with color added by Prismacolor pencils and embellished with crystals.
Artist Statement: The spiral represents the loss of control of a person afflicted with Alzheimer’s. The crystals represent the nuggets of clarity that sometimes occur spontaneously; the crystal clear thoughts or words that can provide brief interludes of joy for the caregiver. The satin-stitched binding speaks to holding it all in, keeping it all together, which was a challenge for all of us in the family.
Dedication: This piece is dedicated to my father and speaks to the spiral of the disease; sometimes he didn't know who I was and yet at others he had moments of clarity where he could tell stories of his childhood and growing up in Illinois. The juxtaposition of spiraling downward against the clarity of some moments is the embodiment of mid-stage Alzheimer's.
