7676 – Corners of the Mind

Louise A. Tiemann
Vestal, NY   USA

Width: 9"   Length: 12"

Materials/Techniques: Machine pieced background of various home decorator fabric samples - multiple colors and textures, embellished with silk yo-yos and beads. Hand quilted.

Artist Statement: The pieced background represents the brain. The silk yo-yos are memories trapped inside. The closed yo-yos represent the memories that can't get out, while the open ones are the snippets of memory that somehow get through. They become the jewels that we remember and recall with love. I used to visit my grandparents in Florida every year with my Aunt Lydia. We would spend a week there with daily visits to the retirement home. At first they were together in a shared apartment, then grandma was moved to the increased care wing. During the visits, she sat and stared off into space most of the time. I sat with her, told her stories, combed her hair and held her hand every day. One day, out on the veranda, for a brief second, she remembered who I was; then she was gone again. I always remember that visit - it was very special to me. She never did recognize me again and soon lost all ability to care for herself.
