Materials/Techniques: I adapted this "lady" from printed fabric and added the borders. Heavily hand-quilted.

Artist Statement: I like this young woman's spirit of adventure, so typical of the generation that is leaving us now. Making it was, in part, a way of silently thanking my mother and grandmother.

Dedication: In memory of Bertha (Ford) Virkler, who chose this fabric because she remembered wearing hats like that ... and may have looked a bit like this when she took a cruise along the Eastern seaboard as a young woman.
