Artist Statement: I made this collage quilt for the people of Japan after viewing all the damage that occurred on 3/11/11. I was relieved when I heard from Etsuko, our foreign exchange daughter who lived with us in 1997-1998, that she, her family and friends were thankfully safe. So many people are still suffering not only from the loss of family and friends but from the lack of basic necessities and the nuclear power plant emergencies. In the quilt, the black symbol represents death; the large circles, the earth sun, moon and whirlpools; the straight lines the destroyed homes; the waves, the tsunami; and the jagged line, the earthquake.
