Designer: Janice Beals. From the book, Hooked on Hankies by Janet Carruth; Laurene Sinema; Suzanne McNeill. c2005, pg 5 and 30. Used with permission.
Materials/Techniques: Embroidery, applique, machine stitching, various fabrics, beads, hankies, embroidery floss, batting, quilting.
Artist's Statement: I have hopes that the pianist will help someone be reminded of the joy music has brought to his/her life. The girl's facial features are omitted intentionally so the viewer's personal memories can fill them in, in his/her imagination. As well, the hankies used (in skirt and petticoat) are reminders that extremely talented artists preceded us all. The social and utilitarian use of hankies as an integral part of life can also generate lasting personal memories.
Judy A. Matlock Dedication: To all pianists and fabric artists.
