Artist's Statement: My mother-in-law Fran was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1994. She finally passed away in March 2009. I decided to make 15 quilts in a series – one for each year since her diagnosis. They start with vibrant colors and complex patterns and progress through paler colors and simpler patterns to the last four pastels. In the pastel quilts, the embroidered butterfly represents the fading of her physical self and the transparent white butterfly represents the joy of her soul being released. Why butterflies? She adored them! She was passionate about Christian education, and the butterfly is a symbol of that as well as a symbol of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
