Autograph quilts have helped to raise significant funds for Alzheimer’s research. Quilter’s World asked that I come up with a new design for single autograph quilts that their readers could use to make Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts. Barbara Bush was the first person who popped into my mind as someone that I would like to contact to help in this effort. The quilt top was sent to her on the day that Hurricane Gustav was scheduled to hit Houston, but it veered off. The signed quilt top came back the day before Hurricane Ike hit. During this time, Mrs. Bush was in Kennebunkport, Maine, where she and her family spend each summer. Thinking of Maine brought back memories of my own grandmother who owned a primitive cottage there. When thinking of quilting patterns, I first thought of the seaweed used in the pot to steam along with lobsters (not exactly a romantic quilting pattern) and then progressed to thoughts of blueberries picked one at a time in the Camden hills. Our thanks to Mrs. Bush who graciously signed on to help fund Alzheimer’s research.
To Barbara Bush for her kindness and generosity.
