(Burton, Michigan - - May 30, 2008) Audrey Arno of Tuttle, Oklahoma has donated the 2,500th quilt to the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative’s (AAQI) Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilt project. The project is a simple way for people to “make finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease a priority.” By creating mini art quilts in any theme with a maximum size of just 9" x 12" (so that it fits a USPS Priority Mailer without folding) anyone can easily become involved. Auctions are held the first 10 days of every month. All profits raised are donated to Alzheimer’s research.
Arno has personally raised $3,091.81 through donated quilts to the AAQI. “It is so gratifying that my donation of Jessica’s House is the 2,500th Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilt, because it shows the growth and the enthusiastic support of the project to raise funds for research for relief of Alzheimer’s. The first quilt I sent in was number 169 in April of 2006 and I have tried to send a few each month ever since. Our family has been fortunate that only one aunt has been a victim of Alzheimer’s and I can’t imagine how families cope with this debilitating disease and continue to function, wondering if and when it will strike again. I wanted to personally do something that would be of use and since I enjoy making small quilts this was a perfect project,” said Arno.
The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative is a national, grassroots organization whose mission is to raise awareness and fund research for Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s: Forgetting Piece by Piece and Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts are two of its efforts. The AAQI has raised and donated more than $157,000 for Alzheimer’s research since January 2006. Ami Simms of Flint, Michigan is the founder and executive director of AAQI and curator of the exhibit. Her mother has Alzheimer’s.
