"I’m in love,” Cora announced with as great a conviction as her giddiness would allow. “I’m truly in love. And he says he loves me, too ”
Now the Butterfly Sisterhood is known to explore the mysteries of life with the earnestness and innocence of children interwoven through their collective lifetimes of experiences, and their proclamations are often a mixture of both. Today, Cora’s declaration became the topic at our table. Exactly what is Love?
“Love is a touch of a warm hand when your body feels cold. Love is a smile and a kiss to calm your fears,” Rachel says. “Love is knowing someone so deeply that neither needs to speak,” Elizabeth adds. “Love is coming every day to be with someone who doesn’t remember you, just because you have memories of them. Love is facing an uncertain future by the side of someone you care for, even though your heart is breaking for the past to return,”Gladys whispers into Cora’s ear.
Cora hesitates and cannot form into words the feelings of her heart. She does not know what love is for anyone but her. For Cora, it is more important that she remember how love feels when her heart flutters whenever her love arrives and seems to stop as he rises to leave. It is enough to Cora that, although she cannot even remember the name of the most important person in her life, she can feel and accept his love. And her husband returns every day to tell her that he loves her, too. I would say that both are deeply, deeply in love and that together, Cora has found its meaning.
Peggy Trickler Dedication:
