Williamsville, NY USAWidth: 9"
Length: 9"
Designer: Original design using techniques learned in a class by Marilyn Urciuoli with her permission.
Materials/Techniques: Fused appliqué with the addition of hand embroidery with silk ribbon and other threads plus beadwork.
Artist's Statement: My husband has a form of dementia similar to Alzheimer's disease. The progression of the disease started out slowly and affected him in small ways in the beginning. When we vacationed in places that were good for snorkeling, Pete loved to go out and visit the coral reefs. One vacation we set out to snorkel with a group. Pete stopped me and said that he had to go back to shore. The problem was that he could no longer figure out how to breathe through the mouthpiece of the snorkel. He kept getting confused. Losing the ability to snorkel was a small thing. But that is what the disease was like in the beginning, the loss of many small things.
Paula Foerder Dedication: To my husband Pete - who has lost all the pleasures he once enjoyed.
