Artist's Statement: My uncle dreamed of becoming a surfer, out on the waves to experience freedom and peace. Of course, living in the mountains made surfing more difficult, even impractical, but, in his mind, skis became boards, snow became white caps, mountains became oceans, and slopes became waves, and freedom and peace for his soul were found.

Dreams are adaptable to circumstance, we are told. And it is true. His surfer’s mind now comes in as waves in an ocean of memories and his challenges are the whitecaps of Alzheimer’s, but, despite the misfortune of his circumstances, his dreams of freedom and peace are realized in his soul, where he is riding the waves of his life.

Dedication: For my uncle, who never surfed on water in his life: Surf's Up!!
