Gladys, the reflective, philosophical member of the Butterfly Sisterhood, greeted us one morning with the solemn proclamation that she "had seen God last night and He spoke to me." Of course, we all were in awe of her encounter, as we had never seen Him, except in Sunday School books and a painting or two or a stained glass window, and asked impatiently for His description in minute detail. Gladys whispered in reverence, "He looks a little like my second husband," and leaned back in her chair.
Although I admit that we were a bit taken aback, with the exception of Cora, who had seen a picture of Gladys's second husband and hadn't been impressed, so we immediately turned the conversation to what wisdom God had imparted during their meeting. "God said," Gladys whispered, looking to see if she held our full attention, " God said, 'see you later, alligator."
The Sisterhood sat nodding in understanding and acceptance of Gladys' revelation. They could understand that God would appear as non-frightening or familiar and would speak words reminding her of a promise made by her Creator before her birth. So they smiled, and each looked upward and answered, almost in unison, "after 'while, crocodile.
Peggy Trickler Dedication:
To Gladys of the Sisterhood, who reminded me that I see the face of God and hear His voice, every time I sit at their table and listen.
