Austin TX USAWidth:
Cotton fabric, cotton lace hand-crocheted by my mother, handkerchief, "Brass" charm; machine pieced and quilted. .Artist's Statement:
Mother quilted when she was young. She crocheted. She sewed clothes for my sister and me. She took us and our friends to the Youth Symphonies. She taught Sunday School. She was treasurer for her church. She led the Girl Scout troupe. She baked lots of cookies and pies, made jams and cakes and lots and lots of good meals. She had supper on the table for her family every day at 5 pm sharp. She gardened and fed the hummingbirds.
Now, she sits and stares at the walls. She calls breakfast 'dinner' and lunch 'breakfast'. She sleeps a lot. Sometimes, she's lucid and warm and loving. Other times she gropes for words and cries when she can't explain herself.
Alzheimer’s robs us all.Dedication:
For my Mother, who I remember. And to the woman that she's become, too. I love them both.
