Artist Statement: Arizona is home to 21 Native American tribes. One of them is the Hopi tribe of northern Arizona. The Hopi's are world famous for their Kachinas, which represent the spirits of the deities that live on Humphrey's Peak near Flagstaff, Arizona. The spirits come down from the mountain to appear at ceremonies several times a year and bring rain to the land. Quilter's Spirit is based on the beautiful hand-carved Kachinas. She is meant to protect from all the various misfortunes that can befall a quilter in the middle of a project, and ward off UFOs. She will protect from yard fabric shortages, broken needles, thread snarls, and piecing mistakes. She helps machine quilting go smoothly, binding go fast, and protects fingers from needle and pin pricks.
