Materials/Techniques: I used felt, cotton backing, border and batting, along with DMC cotton embroidery thread on the design, with regular cotton thread for sewing.
Artist Statement: This quilt was done for the November challenge theme which was Ethnic. I chose the Japanese symbol for happiness. The colors of fabrics were to be bright, but I added some black felt for the front background to make the gold appliquéd symbol stand out. We were also supposed to use foil, but not being able to get to a store to get the materials for that, I cut the background for the symbol to be placed on from a black fabric that had large shiny flowers on it. After I hand sewed the design down, I then sewed small gold seed beads around the entire design. The back is a bright yellow cotton fabric with the cut down black felt symbol sewn in the center. Then I backstitched all around the design, so you actually have a double-sided quilt.
