Designer: Heidi Gosen, heidigosen.com/design/illustration, used with written permission.Materials/Techniques: I used cotton fabric, including the batting in the construction, along with the felt tip markers described previously.
Artist Statement: I made this quilt for the September Quilt A Month Club challenge. I enlarged Heidi’s original drawing just a bit, then traced the design on to the fabric. After putting the batting and backing and front together, I followed the lines with by doing free motion quilting with three layers. After that, I cut around the design and did a zigzag stitch all around. After cutting it out, I hand dyed another piece of fabric using Sharpie and Bic permanent markers and alcohol. I love this method since you never know what will turn out. Then after drying, I heat set the dye with a very hot iron and a cotton fabric over the top. After using the buttonhole embroidery stitch and DMC embroidery floss to sew Miss Sam onto the dyed fabric, I did some free motion machine stitching in the background with a little animal forming in the clouds. That wasn't intended, but it happened.
