Hand appliquéd and hand quilted.Artist's Statement:
I like to appliqué and quilt by hand — it takes longer, but there’s a pleasure from working with my hands that outweighs working with a sewing machine. Stitching by hand allows me to think in silence and solitude — in this case, about the devastation of Alzheimer’s. But, along with the sadness, I treasured the cherished memories of a dear friend and the thousands of flowers he planted over the years.
Lena Hamrick FrostDedication:
In memory of Joe Daffron, our across-the-street neighbor for 23 years in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. We got to enjoy his flowers all those years, and it seems appropriate to remember him with a flower, after his death from Alzheimer’s in January 2007. He had a rich life of almost 90 years, filled with love of family and friends, and was a wonderful surrogate grandfather to our two children.
