Width: 8.5" Length: 8.5"

Designer: Original design

Materials/Techniques: Basic foundation piece that serves as a batting, cotton fabrics, acrylic paints, felt markers, thread painting, glitter glue tubes and knit fabric, machine quilted, hand painted, fabric glue.

Artist Statement: I had the urge to do a sunset and this is also my first seascape! I used glitter a la Thomas Kinkade style to show the reflection in the water. I started with the mountains and just stitched the bottom only down so I could later lift the top of the mountains to put the sun's center behind it and stitch it down. From the mountains, I added all the layers down to the bottom's edge by stitching them to an all yellow cotton foundation piece, as I wanted to use a lot of the yellow in the sky to show through. Then I stitched the center of the sun down behind the mountains. Next I hand painted all the sky in and elsewhere in the quilt -- the ocean and the island at the bottom. I then roughed in my purple cattails, added the glitter to the sea and mountaintops. The binding was hand painted as well to mimic the ocean's handiwork. The whole mini was then sealed with a homemade mixture of Mod Podge as a gesso medium sealer that gives it a soft feel and depth to the painting. The binding was added last. The mountains have a wraparound feature and continue on the backside along with hand drawn cattails in purple to match the purple mountains. I find it challenging to paint on fabric and hope to build more skills with it. I also am happy to be a part of providing a way to help raise funds for a cure for Alzheimer's.
