Width: 11.25" Length: 8.25"
Materials/Techniques: Free-form scissor cutting, free-piecing and stitching on African themed cottons embellished with polished stones, and glass beads.
Artist Statement: We live in a world that is filled with both great beauty and a wealth of challenges. I think of the wild things that struggle day by day to simply survive and also those individuals that struggle to simply remember their own families and their own lives within the walls of their own homes.
My mother would say, "I just want to be free from all of this!” She hated not understanding, not remembering and not being able to do the things she once loved. Now, she doesn't even remember any of that. Her mind is free from wishing and wanting, but she is still trapped in the body that can no longer do anything she once wanted it to do. Saddest of all, she doesn't remember even wanting to be free.
Dedication: For all who long for freedom whether for themselves or their loved ones. May we someday all be free from this terrible and challenging disease!
