Artist's Statement: "What do you call a cow wearing a crown?" A dairy queen, of course! Like many others, my sister and I passed the time "counting cows" during road trips with our parents. [Did you know that "cow spots" are much like our fingerprints? Unless they are cloned, no two cows have exactly the same pattern!] And, in case you're planning a road trip, here are the rules for the counting cows game: First, decide on a destination where players will stop counting. Players then start counting the cows on their side of the road. The goal is to have the highest number when the destination is reached. Any side that passes a cemetery has to start counting over again.

Dedication: For my mother; who helped us learn to count, counted cows right along with us, and who patiently read / re-read nursery rhymes about cows jumping over the moon, cows with crumpled horns, brown cows, pretty cows, cows in the corn, and one of our favorites - the little old lady who swallowed the cow to catch the goat to catch the dog to catch the cat, to catch the bird....

This quilt is displayed with a hanging ring.
